Microdosing

Microsdoing seems to be making headlines lately, but what is it anyways and what does it entail? Microdosing involves consuming sub-perceptual doses of psychedelic substances, such as LSD or psilocybin mushrooms. Unlike full doses that induce strong perceptual and psychological effects, microdoses are carefully measured to produce subtle changes in cognition, mood, and creativity without causing hallucinations or altered states. This practice has gained attention for its potential to enhance focus, creativity, and emotional well-being. Microdosers often follow a schedule, taking these small doses every few days or weekly for about one month at a time.

A popular approach to microdosing comes out of the work from Paul Stamets, a mycologist and advocate for the use of fungi, who has shared his own approach to microdosing using psilocybin mushrooms. The protocol involves a specific cycle of microdosing: five days on, followed by two days off. This means you would microdose for five consecutive days, then take a break for the next two days, before starting the cycle again. The suggested dose for the Stamets Protocol is around 1/10th to 1/20th of a regular psychedelic dose, which is typically about 0.1 to 0.2 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms. It’s important to note that individual responses to microdosing do vary significantly and that the protocol might need to be adjusted based on how somebody’s body and mind react.

While this isn’t mandatory, Stamets recommends using a blend of various mushroom species containing psilocybin rather than relying solely on a single species. The rationale is that different mushroom species may contain varying ratios of beneficial compounds. Stamets uses a combination of Lions Mane, psilocybin mushrooms, and Niacin in his microdose formula. His theory is including Lion’s Mane mushrooms improves potential cognitive abilities and Niacin (vitamin B3) helps to enhance circulation. Some people may experience a flush or itchiness when adding Niacin. If this is the case, remove Niacin from your protocol and just add in more Lions Mane to the mix.

Improving your microdosing experience involves careful planning, self-awareness, and a mindful approach. It’s important to set clear intentions to determine why you are microdosing in the first place. Whether it’s for enhanced creativity, improved mood, or personal growth, having clear intentions will help guide your experience. Working with a Therapist or coach ahead of time to craft your intentions can be a powerful support to the practice.

It is also important to say that microdosing is not to be used in place of western medications, such as Wellubrin or Lexapro, with a this for that approach. As in, If i take a microdose my depression will go away. Rather, by working with a natural substance and becoming aware of the root causes of your condition, the microdose can support your healing and therefore your depression or anxiety can get better. It is imperative that we release the western medical paradigm for a holistic model.

You will need to choose the right substance and protocol that works best for you. If you’re considering psilocybin mushrooms or other psychedelics, keep in mind that consistency in substance quality is important for a safe and predictable experience. Throughout your protocol, Journaling can be a powerful practice where you can document your experiences after each microdose. Note your mood, thoughts, energy levels, and any insights gained. This can help you track patterns and changes over time. It’s really important to pay attention to how each microdose affects you. Mindfully observe changes in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to better understand the effects.

It can be even more important to pay attention to your basic health during a microdose protocol. Remember to maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated, as your body’s needs can change during the microdosing period. Avoid substances that might interfere with the effects, such as alcohol and excessive caffeine. Prioritize self-care, including adequate sleep, exercise, and stress management, to support your overall well-being. You will also want to create supportive environments for the days that you are dosing. Engaging in creative activities, spending time in nature, or practicing meditation can enhance the experience as well. If you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking medications, consult with a healthcare professional before starting a microdosing regimen. Just like you would a full blown ceremony, take time to reflect on the insights gained afterwards and how they might apply to your daily life. Checking back in with your Guide, or Therapist, or attending an integration circle would be a good idea!
